Game of 3 Halves Game

Flash rugby games are somewhat in limited supply out there, so sometimes you must just take what you can get. With football games seemingly raining from the internet skies, it feels like rugby is often forced to take the sporting back seat. So can a game that takes a clichéd title and applies a small twist really kill a decent amount of time for the average rugby fan? Game of 3 Halves certainly gives it the old college try.

Game of 3 Halves isn’t a game that’s going to satisfy a serious rugby fan looking to experience the game as it takes place in the real world. Instead, it’s a flash-based distillation of a handful of the sport’s most exciting aspects (and the aspects which best translate into a game that can be controlled entirely by the passage of the mouse and a tapping of the spacebar).

The aim of this game is reminiscent of real-life rugby. In fact, the entire premise is that you’re thrust into the closing minutes of an important cup game, trailing by 6 points with only 3 minutes left on the clock. Only a successful try and a conversion will save the game, so it’s up to you to make this happen. You get to choose your team from a selection of the world’s greatest rugby teams (from Japan to New Zealand, and Australia to Wales), after which gameplay will commence.

The gameplay itself is extremely simple, with controls that even a fool couldn’t get wrong. Simply use the mouse to guide your player across the screen; the active player will follow the direction of your mouse pointer automatically. Move the character across the screen with the aim of scoring the required try and conversion. You score points the quicker you move across the screen, with points being deducted for each pass you need to make.

Because of the rapid ebbing and flowing of points during the game, this isn’t a relaxing experience. In fact, it’s quite a tense one from start to finish. However, it’s got a reasonable amount of fun to be extracted from it., provided you aren’t looking to experience a rugby match from start to finish. Instead, you should look forward to frantically trying to keep the ball in hand, using the spacebar to offload and clicking the mouse to sprint. It’s frantic. It’s fun. It’s rugby. What more does one need?
